Thank you Daniel for the detailed solution. I ended up doing something similar to this and finally achieved the results I was looking for. I downloaded CUPS-PDF for Mac which also allows printing straight to PDF. I wasn't really sure if you could print a PDF to a PDF, but this does work. In the page set-up dialogue box I set the scale to 90%, then printed to CUPS-PDF. It took awhile due to the size of my original PDF (271.7 MB). The only drawback was once it was completed, I had no idea where it put my file! After doing some searching I found it buried several folders deep: iMac/private/var/spool/cups-pdf/diane. I added this folder to my sidebar so I don't have to search for it again.
I then opened the new PDF in Acrobat Professional, added the page numbers, and saved the file. The final PDF is 219.3 MB; smaller than the original file, but still suitable for print, which was my goal.
