Re: N-Up print to file error: "Before you can perform print-related tasks … you need to install a printer."

You need a physical printer on a Mac. What you are trying to do is to "refry" a PDF document (meaning, printing a PDF file to another PDF). This is possible with the Windows version of Acrobat by printing to the "Adobe PDF" printer, but this is not available on the Mac. The "PDF" button on the print dialog does not work the same way, and Acrobat does not let you refry your PDF document this way. You can create a generic PostScript printer that creates a PostScript file, which you can then distill. The way this works has changed with Yosemite, and I have not found the time to figure out how that is done now. In older Mac OS X versions this was relatively straight forward, but my first attempt did fail.

The better way to create n-up documents is to use an imposition software (either an Acrobat plug-ing or a standalone product). I use Quite Imposing Plus for that - there are others out there that are good too. If this is something you need to do on a regular basis, you may want to look into an imposition tool.
