How to avoid getting errors when printing PDF on HP PCL6 printers

I have created a number of 2-paged documents. They are created in InDesign CS6 and have been exported to PDF through the built-in export function - basic high quality setting.

The problem arises when the PDFs are printed. On most printers they print fine. But on some HP printers using PCL6 the printer displays an error message  (49.xx.xx) and cannot print. On some printers the problem is solved by updating the printer firmware, but not on all, and you cannot expect customers around the world to all have the latest printer firmware.

If I print the exact same InDesign document through an external PDF printer (PrimoPDF) with standard settings there are no printing errors on the same printers, and the document prints fine.

I have tested various versions of the document:

Nothing helps!

I think this may have happened recently as this is the first time I get complaints and I have been using InDesign 6 for over a year and the same people have previously printed PDFs generated by the same software & hardware without errors.

Have anyone else encountered this issue?

Any advice about how to solve this?

I have searched the Adobe help and community sections without finding an answer to my issue.
