That error would lead me to believe that the crop data is missing.
Frequently when placing a pdf into ID it will error similar to as you show. The cause (in my experience) is that -
You have not toggled Show Options during the Place command; InDesign is defaulting to an attribute which is not defined in the document (some attribute, ie;Trim, will be grayed out when you Place again and toggle the Show Options button).
